Pootles' SpringWatch Botanicals Layered Card How To PLUS GIVEAWAY

I must be the most unscientific card maker out there. Earlier in the week I talked about being a bit of a ‘chop and see how it looks’ kind of girl when I’m making cards and today, to end our wonderful 2 week series, I decided to show you one of my ‘signature’ type layered cards.

I really do work like this. I rarely have predetermined measurements for my cards and I just have a play and see how it looks. I don’t pontificate particularly, I chop and go and hope it turns out okay. Is that a talent? I don’t think so. I think it’s about simplifying the card making process and making it accessible and doable for anyone.

So today I want you to get out your DSP and hack it about and make a card. Don’t think you have to have any rules or set designs in your head. Layer it up and see how it looks!

And of course, I am giving away BOTH these cards to you. One to a commenter here on my blog and one to someone who comments on my YouTube channel.

You have til Wednesday 17th!

Best of luck!

  5. alison gibson says:

I do think sometimes we all over analyse what we are doing when card making and it doesn’t always make for a good card

  6. Love it!

  7. Doreen Collins says:

always find it helpful when you show how you do your layers so thank you. and springwatch has been a great couple of weeks of videos as ever x

  8. Hi Sam, i have been loving your Springwatch very much and learn so much from your videos you make it all look so easy but most enjoyable.I do find layering rather complicated myself. Many thanks Maree

  9. Striking card Sam, i rather like those dark colours for a change, thank you. Like you i dont begin with strict measurements, i tend to rummage around in my scrap drawers seeing what size ‘bits’ i have then see if i can find something to match or contrast – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, but nothing ventured etc.

  10. I have loved watching you making cards in this series. I also love your 3D projects. I now know how to layer my cards. Thank you so much xoxo

  11. Kerrie Rootsey says:

  13. I can’t believe that Spring watch has finished

  14. Camilla, Sweden says:

    Lovely cards Sam… love the colours… 🙂 x

  20. Since watching your videos I quite like the challenge of layering and even though I am new to this, I am glad to see I am not the on,y one who uses finger nails to measure. First spring watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it so a big thank you.

  21. Hi Sam,
loved watching springwatch 2016. I struggle with layers, I always seem to over think it instead of just going with the flow you did in no time and came up with two lovely cards. Xxx

  22. Nancy Rasing says:

Wow. Like your chop method. Thank-you for sharing.

  23. Well Sam, I’m NOT at all like you!! I need a design either in my head or from a sketch, specially when I incorporate some DSP, it’s hard for my brain to digest color and patterns and combine them to achieve something appealing so I really, truly admire people who can do this things so easily and naturally like you.
I’m so happy you share this talent so selflessly, so freely with the world, it really helps gals like me who suffer from the color/pattern block.
It would be awesome to win one of this amazing cards, thank you for the chance!!!
    Big Hugs,

  24. Where have the two weeks gone? Time runs so “relatively” – no, I’m not Einstein, I just like your lovely cards and boxes and every morning I look for your ideas and tutorials. And time flys .. (wish I could say the same at the dentist – “lol”). Thanks so much for sharing your ideas, hope you’ll never stop!!

  25. Oh Sam! I do like the olive green card you created in front of us on the video…it’s green (my color) and you placed the flower charm in the left(left-handed) corner. thanks for sharing and for the chance to win this green card.

  26. I love, Love, Love this card. And I am so glad that I’m not the only one that measures with my thumb nail! Seems to be alot easier than trying to measure and get it exact. Keep the ideas coming! I really appreciate them. Susan from Aberdeen, MD, USA

  27. Linda Vinton says:

Really enjoy all your videos Sam, like your style!! This card is really pretty x

  28. Beautiful card. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

  29. This is so you with the card style, but what a surprise as you went for rich vibrant colours which isn’t like you. Love it and made me rethink of my attitude to using these colours. Thanks for that as we all get in our comfort zones. Keep up the good work as you give us all a lot of pleasure with your mails etc. Happy Valentines Day, hope you are spoilt.

  30. Jennifer Newell says:

  31. Gloria Westerman says:

Love these cards…and I have so enjoyed your videos and I love how you work…will have to tried using the thumbnail…and when you said your mind lost the measurement…that was so me…but I do eyeball the layers as well…never thought anybody else do that…to funny…
Thank you so much for making these videos …Happy Valentine to you and your family…hugs from Tennessee in USA….

  32. Beautiful cards Sam, as usual. I just love watching your videos

  34. Sam…what a great way to start my day. I am stunned by your ability to make such beautiful cards on a whim! Thanks for the entertainment!

  35. Hi Sam! This was a fun project to watch. I thought I was an odd duck because this is the same method I use to put so many of my cards together…and I always wind up making card sets because I don’t stop until I’ve used up the entire sheet of DSP! If the layers don’t thrill me, I add dimensional (pop dot)! I call it “chop-n-pop card making! Love the card layouts, by the way :).

  36. Hi Sam,
thanks for Springwatch. It was a great pleasure watching your videos the last two weeks, I really enjoyed every bit of It. Today’s card was marvellous, I liked the layering and the colour combination. I wouldn’t have had the courage to use such bold colours but the card is really beautiful. Thanks once again for sharing your brilliant ideas. I would also like to know if you do any layering and stamping on the inside of your cards.

  37. Oh Sam, you are such a delight to watch! During today’s video, I caught a quick glimpse of the inside of your stamp case. It appeared that you placed the labels on the inside of the case. Is that correct?

  38. Renee McClintock says:

I love the card and I love your use of the candy dots!! I have just discovered how fun they can be. 🙂

  39. isabelle Messier says:

So pretty design! love this set up for cards using disign papers!!
    thank you sharing this!

  40. Thank you for taking the fear out of cardmaking! Layers are simple but elegant! The darker colors are especially good for the guys too.
I’m a demo in Texas, but if I could, I’d resign and sign up again under you as downline. It would be an honor to be on your team!
Thank you again for sharing your beautiful projects….but most of all, thank you for sharing your kindness and sweet Christian spirit!
    Blessings to you,
    Sharon L.

  41. Thanks so much for Springwatch. It was really fun for us (although I know a lot of work for you). Working without measurements is not something I am ready for yet – it makes me itchy just thinking about it. Which is why I watch videos!!

  42. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful ideas with us. Love all of your projects and videos. I especially love to hear you talk.

  43. Love this non structured way of designing cards. A gal after my own heart. Your videos are so much fun to watch and I try to do make each project.

  44. Nadine Motes says:

Love all the boxes and cards that you show us–they inspire me and you give the measurements so I can recreate them with my stamps and designer paper and cardstock-Thanks for all you do Sam!!

  45. I love the way you design..just go with the flow!! I tend to be a little more structured but am sure I could loosen up a bit with a little practice! LOL I really enjoy your posts and the SpringWatch was the boot of inspiration I needed. Thank you so much.

  46. terrie rodrigue says:

I like your way of thinking…do it as you go…
I’m the type that needs everything just right….in my card making and cooking.
Thank you for all of what you have shown us through the SpringWatch…great videos and ideas….well done Sam

  50. Have enjoyed your Spring Watch Series these past couple weeks SO much! You are so talented w/ your card making plus the projects that you create. You make it look so easy…even a person like myself can do this too! Thank you for these 2 weeks of tutorials. They have been excellent!

  52. Gaylene Clarkson says:

I am absolutely in love with watching you. You are so inspiring. I really enjoyed watching you put this card together and seeing you work the same way I do when it comes to making layered cards. Thanks for sharing your talent.

  53. Nannie Annie says:

    Lovely cards. Thank you.

  54. Christine Davies says:

    Hi ‘our’ Sam,
It may not be scientific but it is artistic and is a great way to show case our DSPs! You have a ‘good eye’ for colour and what design goes with another. One coming from your professional beautician side of you and the second from you prefering feminine type cards. That takes talent (grit and determination actually) when you live with 5 boys (sorry Chris – men!!!) Having said that, I prefer the second one because it intoduces a texture which I feel us important with nature themed cards. I love all of Stampin’ Up’s! embossing folders for this! I also think that a combo of just two patterns plus the salutation/sentiment/ greeting is enough. I like ‘shaking things up’ with my crafting now and again to prevent it becoming boring /too repetative or becoming lazy/stale.
Sam – you continue to be a HUGE inspiration to me – thanks.
    Christine xOx

  55. Sam, I’m a thumbnail ‘marker’, too! Just seems the quickest, easiest way for measuring layers for me. Loved today’s card…that’s my style of layering, too.

  56. wow…they are amazing!

  57. This is such a friendly card!
It give me the feeling of getting together in our screen room
during the summer amongst the plants
and fountain and visiting w/ a friend! Lovely!
    thank you for sharing!

  58. Fay Marie Gardner says:

    Hi Sam!
I think that both of these cards are beautiful! I do like the layered look! Thanks for sharing.
